Vouth In Turkish Cinema The aim of this thesis is to search the images of young people in Turkish films. The sphere is limited by the period between sixties and nineties, in sixties and early seventies, Turkish cinema was the most popular entertainment in Turkey; also the rate of cinema attendance was increasing. At the same period, young population of Turkey has become sociologically important than ever. Young audience has been the major group of moviegoers since the beginning of fifties in Western countries. Film makers, especially in USA, caught the opportunity to exploit this new market. The result was to produce science fiction and horror films or rock'n'roll pictures and sentimental stories for young people. But the relation between youngsters and cinema is not the same in Turkey. Young audience has always been the important part among the total amount of moviegoers in Turkey. But it seems Turkish cinema couldn't use the chance of attracting these young moviegoers. This is one of the main causes of crises which Turkish cinema is suffering today. Heroes and heroins of Turkish films are always youngsters. But they are portraied only in their physical existence. Their fates depend on the rules of melodrama. In Turkish film, age doesn't cause any difference in plot lines. Youngsters act, behave, talk and wear, like or dislike as olders. Their special problems or hopes, feelings or stresses, enthusiasms or whims and passions 270 are rarely presented. On the other hand, youth image, in Turkish films is mirrored the attitudes towards young people in our society. In last decade, especially in the big cities, some kind of change can be observed amongst the young population. But Turkish cinema still can not seize this change.
