Objective: Family functionality is important to develop and prevention of psychological health in children and youth. In children before adolescence most important reason for suicide attempt is divided family relationship. Psychiatric diseases, developmental problems, personality disorders, biologic predisposition, stress, insufficiency of social support mechanisms are causes of suicide attempt in children and youth. Method: 30 child and adolescent who admitted to Ataturk University Faculty of Medicine Psychiatry Clinic and 33 healty child and adolescent who have no suicide attempt history included to this study. Sociodemographic datas are collected with a form, Family Asessment Scale and Hamilton depression scale are performed. 30 child and adolescent who have suicide attempt and 33 healty child and adolescent who do not have suicide attempt history with similar sociodemographic properties included to this study. The child and adolescents age range was between 11-22 and the mean age was 17.21±3.14. Results: In the suicide attempt group 83.3% was girls and 16.7% was boys. 76.7% of suicide attempt was performed immediately and only 23.3% was planned before. For suicide 90% of this group was used drug and poison ( mice poison etc.). 50% of this group had having the first suicide. Conclusions: Functionality of family was found statistically lower when suicide attempt group compared with control group. Problem solving, communication and general functionality subscale of family asessment scale were found statistically higher and significant in suicide attempt group when compared with control group. The child and adolescents with suicide attempt must be evaulate with their families and clinicians must interview with families about situations which reduces and disturb family functionality.
